I met an intriguing man. Three years ago he climbed a mountain on a business trip in a corner of the world, found it filled with farms growing these red beans. He had no idea what they were, talked to the farmers that owned the plots of land on his trek up. In addition to forging friendships, he learned he was climbing through coffee farms. Something about it struck him, these poor farmers living in remote parts of the world cultivating black magic on mountain tops. He went back to the states mesmerized and the next time he had the opportunity he flew back, climbed the same mountain, talked to the same farmers, and bought himself a plot of land. He was never a coffee drinker but he learned everything he could about coffee. How to grow them, how to pick them, how to roast them, and grind them, and bring out the tones. He started going monthly to this foreign country, starting drinking coffee, became an expert. Three years ago I started from nothing he said, and I’m finally about to get my first batch. I asked him if the plan was to open a coffee shop. No, he said. I think I’m going to enjoy them.
